“More Than a Month”
Shukree Hassan Tilghman, a 29-year-old African-American filmmaker, sets out on a cross-country campaign to end Black History Month. He stops in various cities, wearing a sandwich board, to solicit signatures on his petition to end the observance. He explains that relegating Black History Month to the coldest, shortest month of the year is an insult, and that black history is not separate from American history. Through this thoughtful and humorous journey, he explores what the treatment of history tells us about race and equality in a “post-racial” America.
His road trip begins in Washington, D.C., crisscrosses the country during Black History Month 2010, and ends with an epilogue one year later. Each stop along the journey explores Black History Month as it relates to four ideas: education, history, identity, and commercialism.
Tilgman’s campaign to end Black History Month is actually a provocative gambit to open a public conversation about the idea of ethnic heritage months, and whether relegating African American history to the shortest month of the year — and separating it from American history on the whole — denigrates the role of black people and black culture throughout American history. But it is also a seeker’s journey to reconcile his own conflicting feelings about his own identity, history, and convictions.
More Than a Month is not just about a yearly tradition, or history, or being black in America. It is about what it means to be an American, to fight for one’s rightful place in the American landscape, however unconventional the means, even at the risk of ridicule or misunderstanding. It is a film is about discovering oneself.

Wednesday/Thursday – In periods 1, 4 & 7 we will have a quiz over changes in dimensions, section 7.9. In all classes we will be going over combinations. Homework for all classes will be a worksheet.

Friday: We will have an activity reviewing permutations and combinations. There will be NO HOMEWORK

Note: Chapter 6-7 Test retakes will be Wednesday (2-15) during TEAM time or before school ONLY.

WHAT IS IT?

PREP is an intensive mathematics-based pre-college enrichment program, which provides educational enrichment opportunities for high ability middle and high school students

WHY Attend?

Explore and prepare for careers in the fields of science, engineering, and mathematics.

WHO CAN ATTEND?

Middle school and high school students who are high achieving and are interested in learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics professions. Students applying must be willing to give up an entire six weeks of their summer vacation. Minorities and females are especially encouraged to apply.  Priority is given to students who are economically and socially disadvantaged.

WHEN DOES IT OCCUR?

June through July of every year (Monday-Friday) from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

WHERE?

All program functions, except for field trips, will be held in classrooms at theUniversityofHouston– Downtown.   

COST?

There is no tuition or fees to attend PREP.

Classes will be taught by college professors, scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and premier high school teachers. College students serve as mentors and tutors.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA?

• Applicants must have successfully completed the 7th, 8th, or 9th grade prior to entering the First Year of PREP.
• Applicants must have a B or better overall average (C or better if enrolled in honors, enrichment, or gifted and talented classes) in their academic courses during the 2007-2008 school year at the time of application. All seventh grade applicants must have an A average (B or better if enrolled in honors, enriched, or gifted and talented classes).
• Applicants must have satisfactory conduct grades throughout the academic year.
• Only students who have successfully completed the First Year are eligible for the Second Year, and only students who have successfully completed the Second Year are eligible for the Third Year. Students who have successfully completed Third Year are eligible for Fourth Year.

Monday/Tuesday – Periods 1, 4 & 7: We will be doing a classwork activity to check understanding of changes in dimensions of figures, section 7.9. Periods 2&6: We will be starting our unit on probability & statistics.

Wednesday/Thursday: These days of classes will be short due to testing the first half of the days. In class for all classes we will be doing experimental probability activities.

Friday: This is a charger day but 7th grade will be testing the first part of the day, and will miss the first few classes. However, all period’s projects are due by the end of the day on Friday. In class we will be doing more probability activities.
